I'm a senior at NC State. Although I wasn't fortunate enough to know Kristin, I've been interested in the story since the beginning. I started school the fall following her tragic disappearance. Being from Charlotte as well, this has been so close to home in so many ways. Although my apology doesn't mean much, I am very sorry that your family is going through this. I'm so proud and impressed with all of your efforts, however, in helping others in similar situations. My prayers are forever with you and your family.

I have known Kristen since the ninth grade at South Charlotte and through highschool at Providence and we also attended State together our freshman yr. sharing rides between home and school. Although I have moved so far away from home, Kristen comes up in conversation very often. Fliers were even posted here at the University of Texas in some of the buildings. I received an email the other day telling me about a new program coming up about her case and any new leads, it made me want to visit the site. To the Modaferris, I have only met you twice but my heart goes out to you and your family. Never give up hope... it is the only thing we have. God bless and keep searching. Neely Rogers

I have been following Kristen's story through the email. I am in shock to think that such a horrid thing could happen to someone who is from Raleigh NC. I hope that you have luck with the new broadcast. My love and prayers are with you.

I'm sorry I have been so out of touch. Our charity ran into financial problems. I'm working it out. But we are back online now and posting Kristen's picture and a link to your site again at http://www.watch-dog.org The page is under construction so not everything is working yet, but this link is working fine. Please also view http://home.beseen.com/community/kidsearch and http://members2.clubphoto.com/chris197733/watchdog/ and http://www.zing.com/album/?id=4293797733 and this multimedia newsletter. This is the rough cut. I am improving it, then sending it all over the place even to television stations to get others to run it. Let me know if their are any changes to make and I will make them. Here is the link. You need RealPlayer to view it. A RealPlayer Slideshow from KIDSEARCH - http://www.zing.com/slideshow/00/1f/cd/4/001fcd42/haveyouseenme.ram I may have been out of the loop for awhile but I'm back and here if you need anything. I was surfing the net looking for information about something that i saw on TNT yesterday and I ran across your page. I would just like to say that while I have never went through something like this, that I can totally understand how you feel. There has to be a way to find out what happened to your daughter. Maybe someone will come forward. Don't give up on your determination and faith.

Our family leaves tomorrow on a vacation to San Francisco. We will have Kristen in our hearts and prayers as we tour and visit the city. I printed a flyer to have with us, wish I could wear it on my back. We want the Modafferi family to know that we are thinking of Kristen and send positive hopes for answers.

In 1980 my Brittany was killed and the only thing that I have ever thought that is worse would be to have a child taken. The agony of ¬ knowing& must be the worst cross to bear. My thoughts, tears, and prayers are with you and your family. May God Bless and Keep you strong to continue looking. If the person who took your daughter reads these messages - may God touch him and have him contact you to ease your tortured minds. No one can make sense of this type of event. The only thing that ever gave me peace about my own daughter was what a women told me soon after I lost Brittany - she told me that "God must want to brighten up Heaven once in awhile because of all the older souls (weathered flowers) who come there - so sometimes He will reach down to Earth and pick a rosebud." I hope you find your daughter soon but know this - we all get to meet again in Heaven some day - no matter what this life deals us.

Dear Modafferi family, I spoke with you, Mrs. Modafferi, a little over two and a half years ago. The Charlotte Observer had recently published an article on your daughter, Kristen, and the loving family of which she was a member. For over ten years, I lived in San Francisco, went to the Cliff House often, and Spinelli's, even more so. I can see her in my mind's eye, at the Crocker Galleria, taking the Geary bus out to the ocean, as I have down so many times. She is ever-present in my mind and my thoughts and prayers go to you and your family. As the days and months and years pass, and with them, the wrenching loss that she was not there to share life's large and small moments. I feel a connection to her. I pray that she is alive somewhere in this big world and will return to you, her loving family. In all the messages I read of people that knew her, she is a special and beautiful person who brought much joy to those who knew her. With the touching story in the newspaper those two plus years ago, it reminded me of the kind of love I have for my sister, as her sisters have for her. May God bring you comfort and a speedy return of your beautiful Kristen.

Kristen if you read this please call home. My daughter disappered when she was 9. For several hours I didn't know where she was. When we did find her,I wasn't angry. I picked her up and sat in a chair, holding her and crying because I was happy to know she was safe. That was all that mattered. I will watch for you & pray for your safe return. You parents want the same outcome. Your safe return home. May they be blessed with your safe return.

Kristen is a very beautiful and obviously smart and loved young woman. As I deeply examine her photographs, I look into her eyes and ask &Where are you? Tell me, so that I can tell your family& - I am sure that I am not the only person praying that I see Kristin, that backpack, or those shoes. I am confident that all the hard work behind the search for Kristin will pay off with her safe return. My thoughts and prayers are with you daily.

I am very sorry for all that your going through. I pray that Kristen and your family have received the freely given gift of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Pray and fast and never give up hope. Lean upon the immovable cornerstone that is Jesus. Pray for faith and believe, for nothing is impossible with God. Surrender to Him and seek His face. If you even have a little faith, you can move mountains into the ocean. Always keep in mind that it is not by strength nor might but by God's Spirit. When you feel the burden of hardship, remember that God is in control and that His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts; all things work together for the good of those that love Jesus. Christ's servant and yours, Garrett

What greater agony can there be for a family than to lose their child? Kristen, if you read these messages, don't be afraid to go home, your family would feel only relief that you were safe in their arms again. And I am sure they would allow you to live your life in whatever way makes you happy just so long as you make a little space for them. Kristen, if you read this, you can be in no doubt about the overwhelming love and support there is for you, even from strangers such as myself; if it is in your power to do so, PLEASE pick up the phone to your family, it would mean the whole world. Similarly, ANYONE who knows ANYTHING, no matter how insignificant it seems, please share what you know about Kristen and help to reunite this family.

The URL for Kristen's page was sent to me by a friend. I am sorry about the disappearance of your daughter and will be praying that she is found soon. You are doing good work, keep it up and don't give up. I lost my son to murder on January 6, 1997, and that has caused my family untold pain but it would be so much worse not to know what had happened to him. I have created a page in his memory and have added a banner on Kristen's disappearance. The site is http://www.hometown.aol.com/mgull81264/index.html. Hope you are guided to your daughter soon.

There is deep emotion in all of these entries. A great sign that people still care very much about Kristen and her family. There are so many good people in the world and yet there are the monsters too. Just look at all of the missing young women on the main page of this site. Incidentally Amy Bradley's case will be on America's Mosted Wanted 3/4/2000. There is an undeclared war that has been raging for quite some time - good vs. evil. Keep fighting the good fight and never, never, never give up.

Hello again, I just want you to know that I am still out there keeping Kristens name alive and people aware that she is still missing and that someone knows something and will be found because I am never giving up until we have the answers to her whereabouts. So if someone knows something and is reading this I will or someone will find you out sooner or later because your guilt will eat away at you until you come clean. Many blessings to Krisens family and much love to you all Stephanie

Your family has been in our prayers since Kristen's disappearance. We are members of St. John Neumann and bought Kristen's Cookbook at mass last night. I am so glad that you haven't lost hope. We lost a child to cancer 5 years ago which was very painful but at least we know where she is!!! Know that we pray for your family often and look for the headlines each morning of Kristen's safe return. God bless each one of you!!! Our love is with you on this Valentine's Day.

May God guide your search and heal your hearts. My Significant Other lost her brother in 1996, vanished with no trace, and I see how deeply the lack of closure affects her. Do you know of any support groups out there, for relatives of missing persons? If so, I would appreciate being directed toward them. God bless and good luck. You aren't alone. Hope we find David someday.

I have come across your web page while looking for information on other missing people. I do not believe that this was by chance. I know that the Lord intended this for a reason. I have printed several of your posters off and I will mail them to our cousin who lives in San Francisco. I hope and pray that this will help in your search for your precious daughter and I will pray for the answers you are searching for to be revealed. I also pray that the Lord will give you comfort in this time of such horrible trouble. I can't imagine being without one of my sons and not knowing what happened to them. I do know that I would lay all my troubles on the Lord and let him take care of them.

I remember during the 1997 Christmas break from school, my son Terrell helped to organize the yellow ribbon campaign. They brought thousands of small fliers with pictures of Kristen, pins, and yards of yellow ribbon to my house to create the yellow ribbons handed out at the NCSU basketball game. I remember so vividly sitting on the floor of the playroom pinning ribbons to cards for hours and hours. I could not stop. As my back would be screaming with pain, I was able to realize that I do not know what pain is. You knew. Not a day passes that I do not think of Kristen, and you. Corinne

The way that I found out about Kristen is through my Aunt. You see I was down in Jersey for Christmas and she pulled out this cookbook. The reason she had the cookbook was because she is good friends with the woman who started the whole thing. The cookbook is in memory her husband, my Uncle, Chops who passed on last year. I thought that the cookbook was a great way to rasie money for the search of Kristen and ofcourse because it is in my Uncle's memory. I pray that God will give the family answers. I pray that they will find their little girl...miracles do happen. I pray that Kristen is okay and will make her way home soon. She is a beautiful woman and she has a family that misses and loves her dearly. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am sorry for your pain and suffering. God bless you.

As strange as this sounds maybe we should pray for the salvation of Jon Onuma and Jill Lampo, the chief suspects in Kristen's dissappearance. We could ask God to work on their family members to have the courage to confront them about this situation. These two strayed from the &good side of the force& a long time ago, but maybe we can retrive them from the dark side? God hears all prayers.

Dear Modafferis-I still consistently pray for you and your quest to be successful. You all deserve better than this. How about an anonymous donation to up the reward to $100K or so? Surely there are a couple of well-to-do folks who could find it in their hearts to up the ante a bit? Let's all resolve to do something, anything to help the Modafferis this season. There are also plenty of other missing young women, men who need us too. Amy Bradley, Suzanne Lyall, Gayle Marks and Jacob Wetterling to name a few. This type of situation is much more prevalent than Columbine-type incidents.

To Kristens' parents: Keep up the faith. The loss of your beautiful daughter must be with you daily. To All: Tell your college age kids to use the &Buddy System& whenever possible. Having a friend with you is a smart idea. Let someone know when and where you are going. Keep people appraised of your whereabouts. Think about the terrible pain that Kristens' parents have gone through, the open chapter that is their lovely daughter. Take just a moment. Think. The world is full of wacked people, predators waiting to pounce. Be saavy, be safe. To Kristens' folks: God Bless and Good Luck, there are those of us out here who have not forgotten. Try and have a decent Holiday Season.

A grocery list, directions to a campus party, a request to NYU for information on the &Arts and Science Summer Abroad program& She was interested in information on Paris. A Visa card that only expired 2 months ago....this young girl had hopes and dreams for her future. I have a daughter her age. I can't imagine the pain you are going through. Dear Modafferis-Wouldn't it be nice if the network news were to do a segment called &Missing Person of the Week&? I bet many cases would be solved, but per usual they concentrate on things like people being shot in ambushes-much more exciting. There are many more missing kids, people each year than Columbine-type incidents! Typical of the "news" or should I say sensationalists?

Being a parent of a 23 year old daughter and a 20 year old son, I think I can empathize with the disappointment, frustration and emotional upheaval that would result if one of them were kidnapped. But I am sure the reality or it is much more devestating than I could ever imagine. Especially considering that a ransom request was never made and no trace of her or her belongings have ever been found and there are few clues to her disappearance. Her disappearance is so unnatural and devestating for her family, friends, loved ones, school mates, parishiners and all thoose who have come to know of her and love her as a result of her disappearance. Only through the grace of God could her family and loved ones continue with hope and faith. I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT THEY MAYBE MISSING BUT THEY ARE SURELY NOT FORGOTTEN IN ANYWAY AND MAY GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU AS YOU TRAVEL DOWN AND UNKNOWN AND UNWANTED PATH TO FIND YOUR MISSING LOVED ONE AND I WILL HOPE AND PRAY FOR THEIR SAFE RETURN OR THAT YOU MAY FIND AN END TO YOUR TERRIBLE TRAGEDY. Again I make an appeal to Jill Lampo to come forward and unload the burden of what you know about Kristen. You must feel terrible about this whole episode and rightfully so. I ask you to imagine how Kristen's family feels right now and act soon to right this wrong. That's the good part, the salvation that you and only you can give-the truth. The truth can set you free from the prison you wake up to everyday. The thought that this Onuma character is waiting around the corner waiting to silence the truth(you) forever leaving the Modaferris in complete limbo. You see the truth you hide will set them free as well. Come on Jill, this isn't the way it's supposed to be. You will not regret this decision in the slightest. Let go of your hate, your fear and the conflict inside you. Do that and life will be better. I can only imagine your life is worse than it's ever been because of Jon Onuma-don't let him win. Rise up and put this punk in his proper place. You are stronger and more powerful than you can possibly imagine.

To the family and friends of Jill Lampo:I don't know if you are aware, but your family member/friend is implicated in a serious crime and ignoring her involvement with Jon Onuma will not make it go away. In fact your silence could be condemming Jill to eventually face the wrath of Onuma-Scum. Jill whether or not you are the blonde people saw Kristen speaking with in the mall after work on that fateful day in 1997 or not, it is quite plain you know facts about this case you are not sharing. Did you always want to be the person you are now? Or did you take the wrong turn somewhere in your life that lead you to this Onuma-monster? I ask you plainly to reach back in your past to your true self, the girl that used to wonder how butterflies flew, why breakfast smelled so good or why the sky was so blue on a crisp Autumn morning and confront your demons of today. Let go of your hate, your inner conflict and come back to the good side. No matter what it takes begin today by making that call. You won't regret it.

Dearest family and friends: Kristen was an outstanding contestant in our Optimist Oratorical Contest. She won our Providence Club level and as I understand did some outstanding levels in other contests. She is a lovely person and her family is always there for her and proud of her. Her mother and father, both, believed in making sure Kristen had a way home after school when she would stay after school and rehearse her speech with the others. Not only does her family love her, she loves them, also. Kristen is very courteous and aware of others. She is appreciative and very intelligent. Of all our contestants, she was one of the most interesting, neatly dressed and intelligent. I was involved in working with her and I am very proud of her Judy Driscoll President Providence Optimist Club Charlotte NC 28211

Read the update. Jill Lampo please turn Jon Onuma over to the PD. If you are involved in Kristen's dissappearance surely you can cop a plea and get this scuz convicted. Do you really want this on your conscious for the rest of your life? Repent now and give your existence to God, he will help and forgive you. Weren't you ever 19 with dreams and hopes like Kristen? It's never too late to be the person you were supposed to be. Do you really someday want to read about your ex being involved in another case like this? I think you know what to do. Have the courage to do it today.

Again, to anyone with knowledge of Kristen Modafferi's whereabouts since June, 23 1997 please come forward and end the unimaginable pain her family is and has been going through. If Kristen's abductor has told you of his/her crime you can't really believe you're safe. If this person abducted Kristen, tell me exactly what would stop him/her from assaulting you? Your friendship? Puhleez, get real! Take yourself out of harm's way and turn the SCUZ in to the PD ASAP. Your silence will not keep you safe. Picture your last thought on Earth being &I should have turned that freak in to the Police& because this criminal is in your home with a weapon pointed at you and/or your loved ones.

I informed my sister, who lives in San Rafael, about the search for Kristen and she is going to direct all her e-mail friends to your site. Since numerous visitors to my web site are from the US, I have put one of Kristen's graphics on my main page and linked it you, in hopes that one of them will recognize her if they see her. You can see it at: WiseHearts! Universal Hope For A WiseHearted Planet! http://www.mnsi.net/~tmcphers/index.htm Scroll down and look in the left-hand column. I have had over 7,000 hits to my site since I created it in April and it continues to climb at about a hundred hits a day. My heart and my prayers are with you all in this terable time of need for answers. Patience is not only a vertue but in cases like these a necessity. I would like to applaud the courage of the women who were victims of Jon Onuma. By coming forward you have shed a great deal of light on Kristen's case, thank you. Kristen's whereabouts are still a mystery though and I ask anyone, including these brave women, to take another big step and lead the authorities to this lost child so she may come home to her family. Based on the false lead that dear Kristen was under a bridge in Marin County, maybe people could search under other bridges in the general SF metro area? In time God will reveal Kristen's location to us, but He does require action on our part. Empathize and then act!

Your life has to go on,although it never will completely, everytime the phone rings-the mail comes-you see someone that looks like her-you lay there at night and wonder where she could be-why did this happen to her. I wish I could say I didn't know how you feel but I do and you have to just hold her next to your heart, never give up hope, never stop trying to find her but don't consume your life JUST trying to find her as it will eat away at your strength until theirs nothing left and you have to remain strong for her, for when she might come home and she will need even more help then. This world....how can someone do this, what has made them so evil that they have no feelings for the other people on this earth. We'll never know nor understand so the only thing left to do is pray and ask God to please return to us the very child that he gave us in the first place. Never give up hope...

I'm one of the housemates Kristen was living with in Oakland. I hardly knew her -- she'd only been with us three weeks and spent most of that time either working or exploring the city alone -- but I'm still haunted by the experience and the loss. And the guilt. Before Kristen came out to CA, I spoke with Debbie on the phone about our house, the neighborhood, the housemates. Like any mother, she was concerned about her daughter going off to the big city. But I assured her it was really a safe place, she had nothing to worry about, and that I'd "look out for her little girl." Obviously, I failed at that. The next time Debbie and I spoke, it was a month later, and I'd called to let them know that Kristen hadn't come home, and we were worried. Since then, my contact with Bob and Debbie has been very limited. I've done everything I possibly could to help the police and investigators and media working on the case, but I've been virtually unable to face the family. Even to tell them how sorry I am, how much my heart goes out to them, how much more I wish I could do, and how I wish I had taken Debbie's concerns just a little more seriously. Happy Birthday, Kristen, wherever you are. Please call home. Please let your mother know that her little girl is okay.

As it grows closer to Kristen's 20th birthday, we would like to extend our love and support to Debbie, Bob and Kristen's sisters. We see you at church, and so want to let you know how hard we are all praying for Kristen's safe return. We can only imagine the sheer terror you have had to endure these past 2 years. Hi, I'd like first to say how sorry I am that Kristen and your family are going through such a hard time. I pray that God will bring her home safely and your prayers will be answered. She sounds like a wonderful person. Also I am trying to check in on the recent developments and am having trouble getting to the articles in some of the papers. I can get to the sites but cannot seem to find it from there. I know that "Bill" is always in touch with the latest and although it may be a long entry, maybe you can help and other people too will be able to better keep up on the latest. Thanks and God Bless you all. You have a lot of people that care and are praying for you all. Cyndy

I miss Kristen everyday. Although I no longer attend NC State, I remember the fun that we had in Scholars' forums together (Frank Lloyd Wright)and all the great times we had at Providence with Mr. Lemons (!). I would like everyone to know that her brilliance and artistic abilities are sorely missed and hopefully, I will one day be able to deliver those bagels at 7am like I promised her on graduation day form high school. As her 20th birthday approaches, may her family and friends have the strength to celebrate in a manner benefitting this funny, smart, fabulously gifted, and wonderful young woman who I'm proud to say is a friend of mine. Kristen and all of her family, and friends, are in my thoughts and prayers everyday and be assured that they always will be. With much love and respect, Megan L. You and your family are in our prayers as Kristen's 20th birthday approaches, June 1st. We have 1 daughter living (34 yrs.) and we lost a 15 yr. old daughter in Aug. 1983. Our child died in a collision with another 15 yr. old ...his car was bigger than her dirt bike. We share the grief of not having our daughters with us...but we feel the added pain you have in the search for Kristen and any answers that could bring her home to you. I saw your www in the news article and wanted to tell you, we do have you in our prayers and will on Tuesday, June 1 ...I will be on overload with rentals, miniature club, cleaning lady, contractor meeting, etc. and will not get to the PC to write you then. Please know your prayer need is before our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and His miracles do still happen. I am also praying for Kristen to be strong and have courage & faith in her situation...and to be alert to any opportunities to reach help. I pray this as I write, Sue

Cops Get Second Try in 2-Year-Old Disappearance TV show receives tips in case of Kristen Modafferi Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer Buoyed by new tips, Oakland police tracked down a man yesterday that they want to question in the disappearance of Kristen Modafferi, who was last seen two years ago leaving her coffee-shop job in San Francisco. Investigators spoke with the 37-year-old man for two hours on the telephone yesterday after an acquaintance of his saw a segment of ``America's Most Wanted'' on Saturday that identified him as someone police wanted to interview again in connection with the Modafferi case. The acquaintance arranged for the man to call Oakland police from Hawaii, his current home. The man denied any involvement in Modafferi's disappearance, much as he did a year ago when he first spoke to police. Officers hope to arrange a face-to- face interview soon with the man, a former resident of San Francisco and Oakland who has been accused by several women of psychological torture and assault. Although he is not considered a suspect, police said they believe he might be able to tell them something about Modafferi. The man, whom The Chronicle is not naming because he has not been charged or arrested, could not be reached for comment yesterday. Modafferi, whose 20th birthday will be June 1, was last seen June 23, 1997, after she finished her shift at Spinelli's coffeehouse at the Crocker Galleria in San Francisco. Modafferi was an industrial design student at North Carolina State University who came to the Bay Area on her 18th birthday to take a summer photography course at the University of California at Berkeley. Police believe Modafferi, who lived in Oakland, may have met someone through a free personal ad placed in a San Francisco weekly before she vanished. On July 10, 1997, a man called in a tip to a local television station, naming two women as having killed Modafferi. The man police want to question later acknowledged to police that he had made the call because of a dispute he had with the women. ``He's connected to the case,'' said Oakland police Sergeant John Bradley. ``We've established inconsistencies with respect to his initial statement to us. We want to interview him again and see if we can clear up those inconsistencies.'' On ``America's Most Wanted,'' three women said the man had deprived them of sleep, abused them and tortured them psychologically. One woman called him a ``human vampire,'' while another, Rebekkah Graves, 33, said she was his ``sex slave.'' In an interview with The Chronicle yesterday, Graves said the man burned her with cigarettes and made her believe that he was a member of the Japanese mafia. ``I had to do whatever he said,'' Graves said. ``I had to remain under his so-called `care' because if I didn't, my family would be dead.'' A third woman said he assaulted her when she tried to escape and told her, ``You know I'm going to have to kill you. I can't let you go. Now you know what happened to Kristen Modafferi.'' After the show was broadcast, about 70 people phoned in with tips that helped lead to the man. Bob Modafferi of Charlotte, N.C., said yesterday that he was heartened by the new tips about his missing daughter and the man in question. ``Whether or not Kristen's and his paths truly crossed, we don't know that for sure,'' he said. ``One way or another we need to find out.'' There is a $50,000 reward for information in the case. Those with tips can call Oakland police at (510) 238-3641 or (800) VANISHED. The Modafferi family has set up a Web site at www.modlink.com/kristen/home.htm . Get a printer-friendly version of this article

Kristen attended Broyhill Leadership Camps in high school, and we hung out together once in a while. She was always a really fun person to be with, and was always smiling no matter what. I wasn't old enough to be a delegate at the camp when I first met her (my father is a director for the camps) but that didn't stop us from hanging out. She had to get a ride from Christina once to go back home when the camp was finished - and since Christina was the registrar - she had to wait for about 2 hours after everyone was gone. We had a really long conversation that touched on pretty much everything in our lives. Anyway, I hope that she reappears someday. My prayers are with your family, and I hope to see Lauren at the BLC camps this summer.

Kristen and I attended Esperance french camp the summer of '94 or '95. Along with a few other girls, we banded together and were good friends. I still have pictures of us all - my favorite is the one we took of her right after we pushed her into the lake ("Hey, Kristen, come look at the size of this fish!"...SPLASH!). We didn't really keep in touch after that, although we wrote one or two letters and talked on the phone once. It was a shock to hear her name again two years ago in the papers and since then I have been praying and hoping for Kristen's family and friends that this sadness will be resolved. I can offer few words of consolation, and it's not my place to -- I just wanted to express how much I appreciate the joy and humor Kristen and I shared during our brief friendship. I miss her.

Case of missing woman leads to ex-Bay Area man Tips flood in after 'Most Wanted' TV episode By Larry D. Hatfield OF THE EXAMINER STAFF Nearly two years after Kristen Modafferi vanished from her San Francisco job, police have identified a man they want to question in her disappearance, after three other women said they were held against their will and allegedly tortured by the man. A segment on her disappearance aired Saturday on Fox Television's "America's Most Wanted." A spokesman for the show said Sunday that the tip line logged more than 70 callers with possible information about a man police believe is crucial to solving the Modafferi case. "That is definitely a significant number of tips for us for one night," said show publicist Avery Mann. The three women, who have told their stories to police, said Jon Onuma, 37, was the man who allegedly tortured them, deprived them of sleep, burned them or held them against their will. Police said they have been trying for months to track him down. Onuma lived in San Francisco and Oakland for several years in the mid-1990s and also has lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. Oakland police said on the show that they have been trying for months to track down Onuma, because they believe he may know what happened to Modafferi. One woman in the show quoted Onuma as saying, "You know I'm going to have to kill you. I can't let you go. Now you know what happened to Kristen Modafferi." In Bay Area for 22 days Modafferi, who had arrived in the Bay Area only 22 days earlier, disappeared on June 23, 1997. She was last seen at a Geary Street bus stop after leaving her job at a coffee bar in Crocker Galleria. She was headed for Lands End, she had told fellow workers, to attend a summer solstice party at Ocean Beach. Although bloodhounds picked up her scent on a trail near the ocean, she has not been seen since. One of the women on the TV show called Onuma a "human vampire," another said she was his sex slave and the third says he beat her when she tried to escape. The Charlotte Observer newspaper quoted Mann on Thursday as saying, "The police are saying they believe this man is connected to her disappearance. They're trying to figure out what the connection is. But they can't figure that out until they talk to him — and he's disappeared." Oakland Police Officer Patrick Mahanay, who's heading the investigation, was not available for comment. Onuma, who police say has a minor criminal record, has long been considered a possible suspect by police. Police first learned of him, according to the TV show, when he telephoned police to say two women had killed Modafferi and dumped her body in Marin County. After first denying he was the tipster, Onuma admitted his calls and, police said on the show, told them he could help them solve the mystery behind Modafferi's disappearance. Then he vanished. He was last spotted in Hawaii several months ago. Modafferi had come to the Bay Area on her 18th birthday to take photography courses at UC-Berkeley before returning to her sophomore year at North Carolina State University. She was studying design at N.C. State. Personal ad During initial stages of the investigation, police found a copy of the Bay Guardian in her Oakland apartment, leading them to speculate that she may have placed or answered a personal ad. An ad in the paper police believed she placed read: "Friends. Female seeking friend(s) to share activities, who enjoy music, photography, working out, walks, coffee or simply exploring the Bay Area! Interested, call me." Police believe Onuma used personal ads to find women he could victimize, according to the television show. One of the women interviewed on the show said she met Onuma through a telephone service. Modafferi's parents have maintained an intense public search for their daughter, making frequent trips to the Bay Area, appearing on television talk shows, talking to newspapers, putting up billboards and otherwise trying to keep her disappearance in the public eye. Modafferi's 20th birthday is June 1, exactly two years after her parents last saw her. "We've heard that there may be some good leads this time," said her mother, Debbie Modafferi. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
